Anran Wedding in the rain | Jenny & Jack | and my thoughts about rain on your wedding day!

The rain was not exactly invited to Jack and Jenny's Anran Wedding in Devon, but it certainly brought atmosphere, incredible energy and it stopped nothing!

What an amazing day and what a wonderful couple. Their whole wedding was a true capture of them both, so focused on and surrounded by the love their loved ones have for them. It was also so much fun and a great feeling of 'battening down the hatches' and getting cosy and having a damn good party! Perfect! I loved how much everyone gathered and huddled, laughed, came together, and so thoroughly enjoyed the day in an incredible space.

Anran in Devon is beautiful. It has such a variety of beautiful locations for truly one-of-a-kind wedding days. Indoor options, outdoor options… all set within the most beautiful Devon surroundings. I love it there, it is a perfect space to have an incredible gathering, and it is such a perfect venue for a rainy wedding. Plenty of indoor spaces that are incredibly beautiful - so much so that you don't actually feel like you have missed having outdoor time!

Of all the things we can control, the weather isn't one of them. I just this weekend photographed a very wet and rainy wedding at Lusty Glaze and it was wonderful. We grabbed some brollies and got out for a moment in the rain and it did end up letting up after a while. So with this weekend fresh in my mind, I thought I would make a post with some of my top tips for a rainy wedding.

  • Always have a plan A and a plan B for the weather... always! It's too big an investment to rely on the hope that it will be sunny. Bury that raw sausage (I only just last year learned about this tradition!) .... do what you need to do, but always, always have a solid wet-weather back up.
  • Try and make your plan B as lovely as your plan A, so it doesn't feel like a disappointment.
  • Crack on! There is nothing you can do to change the weather, so with a little bit of prep beforehand you can just get on and enjoy your day. Honestly, some of the best parties I have seen have been at rainy or snowed-in weddings. My third ever wedding was completely snowed in, it took four wheel drives to get us to the ceremony and some incredible groomsmen who got stuck in and organised last minute food and it was amazing!
  • It can be stunning. Weather can bring drama, in a good way! Photography wise, weather that is the opposite of sunshine can add some MEGA drama and I love it! Sunny is wonderful to experience but actually can be quite challenging to photograph. The energy that comes from the anticipation of the weather can be incredible... people huddle together (laughing usually!), and sudden thunderstorms bring chatter and excitement. Dark skies look amazing in photos. Lower light makes for some incredible, creative photos and it all adds to the anticipation (and I love it!)
  • Be a little flexible if you can... it's probably not going to be rainy all day, so I might suggest we wait a bit for photos and do them a little later when I know there will be a break in the skies. I do try and avoid doing groups after food though, as they can become a bit messy. I would rather have indoor groups over outdoor ones where people might be a bit worse for wear... especially the bridal party!
  • Have some brollies to hand, just incase. Colourful brollies add some mega cheer to the day! Clear ones are good for keeping the light on your faces open. Try avoid dark brollies if you can. You can hire brollies specifically for weddings and places like Brolly Bucket, so you don't have to go out and buy a load that will be wasted at the end of the day. Definitely check out Brolly Buckets' website for some fun inspiring umbrella shots... or head to this post here of Alyssa and Phillips' rainy Headland Hotel wedding ceremony on the beach where the weather brought the drama and we all dived into a cave for shelter mid-ceremony!

I always have a wet weather plan. I aim to have 2-3 indoor options in mind for photos ahead of your day. Libraries, beach huts (where I stand in the rain and you stay dry!) cosy corners by a window. Family groups seated in front of interesting walls, fireplaces, I try and always have in mind a few options to defer to if it starts raining. I will always work with you ahead of your wedding to ensure we have a plan for all the elements when it comes to photography - just incase!
